Each year, thousands of people visit Oklahoma's museums, libraries, and archives to experience the treasured photographs, artifacts, and other materials that preserve our rich and unique history.
Many of these irreplaceable materials are endangered because of inadequate housing, a lack of funding for collections care, and untrained staff. A recent survey of Oklahoma cultural institutions discovered that 100% of organizations lost valuable materials in the previous year. Once these cherished treasures are gone, Oklahoma loses a part of its past - a situation that has a profound impact on how we tell the story of all that is unique and special about communities throughout Oklahoma.
You are invited to join with other community leaders in assessing the feasibility of creating the Oklahoma Cultural Heritage Trust, an organization that will begin to address the urgent task of preserving our state's irreplaceable collections. You can help by volunteering to be a Cultural Champion, by providing input , and by attending public meetings that will be held during February and March, 2009.
